2.3 Solving inequality using multiplication and division NOTES and HW

Updated: May 29, 2023

To solve inequalities using multiplication and division, you can follow these steps:

  1. Isolate the variable on one side of the inequality.

  2. Multiply or divide both sides of the inequality by the same number, being careful to reverse the inequality sign if you divide by a negative number.

  3. Check your solution by substituting it back into the original inequality.

Here are some examples:

The solution is z > 5.

It is important to remember that when you multiply or divide by a negative number, you must reverse the inequality sign. This is because multiplying or dividing by a negative number flips the direction of the inequality.

Here are some common mistakes to avoid when solving inequalities using multiplication and division:

  • Forgetting to reverse the inequality sign when dividing by a negative number.

  • Not checking your solution by substituting it back into the original inequality.

  • Making careless mistakes when performing the arithmetic.

By following these steps, you can solve inequalities using multiplication and division correctly and confidently.
